It has to be a candidate for the wackiest tour line-up of all time. Topping the bill, Britain's latest teenybop heart-throbs The Walker Brothers. And touring with them for a month in the spring of 1967 was the cool Cat Stevens, housewife's favourite Engelbert Humperdinck and the wildest man in rock Jimi Hendrix!
The tour kicked off in blazing fashion - literally - at the Astoria at Finsbury Park on Friday March 31 as the teen hordes looked on in amazement as Jimi set his guitar alight as the ultimate show-stealing stunt at the end of his performance. This was to become an occasional feature of the great man's act. In Legends, respected music writer Keith Altham coughs the blag over his part in what happened on that incredible night at the Astoria and Gary Walker, drummer of The Walker Brothers, and Engelbert recall their memories of that tour.
Gary had a reputation as the most approachable Walker Brother in the group's heyday and he remains the same kind, cheerful generous soul to this day. Gary's website features some photos from a day we shared in London, and what great company he is. I would also like to make mention of the delightful Sue Walton, who looks after Gary's website (www.gary-walker.net) so lovingly. Sue and Gary have been true friends since day one.
A big thank-you too to Engelbert who invited me and my photographer friend David Searchfield to his Leicestershire mansion for an unforgettable afternoon. It is stunning to consider that in the decade that followed the tours in Legends Engelbert went on to share stages and friendships with the likes of Elvis, Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Junior.
Engelbert, who was on two of the seven tours featured in Legends, talks of his respect for Jimi and of the double-edged sword of keeping The Beatles off the top spot in the singles charts.
Happily, fans have also spoken freely of their memories of this unique tour and they too give us their insight into what happened.
This photograph, from the files of the Aldershot News, features the Jimi Hendrix Experience in their dressing room at the ABC cinema in Aldershot. With them are young reporter Steve Mann and an even younger lucky young fan, Janice Parsonage, who had been taken along by the newspaper "for a teenager's viewpoint".
